El Mojito Cubano

El mojito no suele considerarse un cóctel clásico, pero desde luego es una de las bebidas más populares y rivaliza directamente con la piña colada, la sangría, el daiquiri y el pisco sour. A parte tenemos otras recetas de cócteles famosos como el Bloody Mari, el cóctel italiano Bellini, el Dry Martini o martini seco y el rebujito de la feria de abril.

Cuba es sin duda alguna la cuna del mojito, a pesar de que el origen exacto de este cóctel clásico es siempre objeto de debate. Una de las historias apuntan a que el mojito se remonta al siglo XVI, concretamente al año 1586, cuando un grupo de piratas ya lo bebían bajo el nombre de “El Draque“, en honor al pirata inglés y comerciante de esclavos Francis Drake.

El mojito, en sus orígenes, se hacía con tafia, un predecesor primitivo del ron blanco, un aguardiente de caña, y se usaban los otros ingredientes para disimular su gusto áspero.

La bebida mejoró mucho durante el siglo XIX, con la introducción de alambiques de cobre y el proceso de añejamiento que desembocó en la forma moderna del ron.

Este cóctel se dio a conocer como una bebida con ‘un poco de mojo‘, donde el toque maestro era cortar las limas y añadirlas al final, y esto provocó que de forma coloquial se le aplicara el nombre de mojito.

In 1586 Queen Elizabeth I of England encouraged the pirates to plunder the Spanish cities of the New World.

One of the pirates was Francis Drake, whose purpose was to plunder Cuba, the place where the Spanish crown kept Aztec gold from Mexico. This news reached the ears of King Philip II and warned the governor of Cuba, so they had time to prepare.
